Preparation Steps (Flame Annealing)

A simple, proven method for achieving optimal results without expensive single-crystal polishing equipment

1

Prepare the Setup

Use a propane/butane Bunsen burner. Dim the room slightly so you can observe the glow color.

2

Handle the Substrate

Carefully remove the gold-on-glass substrate from the tube using a flat spatula or ceramic tweezers.

3

Temperature Treatment

Pass the substrate through the flame until it glows dark red. Remove it immediately and let it cool for approximately 30 seconds. Avoid overheating!

4

Repeat the Process

Repeat the process 2-3 times. Result: well-defined Au(111) terraces spanning several hundred nanometers.
